Burn Victim Seeks Face Transplant

Burn Victim Seeks Face Transplant

A 23 year old man from Dallas was repairing a church window standing on a cherry picker when his cellphone rang- the next thing he recalls is waking up 3 months later in the hospital, having already undergone 20 surgeries. Having come into contact with a high voltage line his face was literally burned off.

He now hopes to be able to get a face transplant, a procedure only a few burn victims have had before. The risks are great with this cutting edge medical procedure and I wish this courageous young man the best.

Not many can even imagine the severe trauma involved with serious burn injury, not only at the time of the burn but long after with the long a painful recovery and adapting process.  Burn injury costs, surgery, skin grafting, psychological help and therapy can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical care with serious burn injuries.

Recent estimates for burn injury are 5,500 annual burn injury deaths in the U.S. annually and 51,000 acute hospitalizations for burn injury.
