The driver of a sedan with four young girls was coming home from an overnight church function when it was hit head-on by a pick-up truck driven by a suspected drunk driver.
According to authorities the pick-up truck was driving on the wrong side of the road when it crashed into the sedan. An 8 year old girl in the sedan was fatally injured in the wreck; The driver and other 3 girls in the sedan were taken by ambulance to a local hospital with injuries.
The pick-up driver was also injured and taken to a hospital for treatment. Harris County Sheriff’s office also says they believe alcohol was involved and has filed intoxication manslaughter charges against him. He is expected in court later this week.
Statistics published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ranks Texas as the national leader of fatal alcohol-related automobile accidents in 2006. More than 1,675 people were killed and more than 63,000 injured as a result of traffic accidents involving alcohol.
Unfortunately it’s not just the drunk driver who is the victim. In many cases it’s the innocent drivers who are in the wrong place at the wrong time whose lives are destroyed by these senseless actions.
