Texas has an epidemic of drunk driving accidents and quite a few of them happen around the holiday season. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, there were over twenty-four hundred alcohol related accidents last year during the holiday season. The aftermath included over eight hundred people injured and seventy-eight people killed.
Christmas parties, holiday outings and the festive season all contribute to the number of drunk driving accidents in Texas and in the Houston area. According to authorities, Harris County has the highest drunk driving fatality rate of any major city in the country. In 201 168 people were killed in Harris County as a result of drunk driving accidents.
To combat this epidemic, a task force has been formed with a grant from the Texas Department of transportation to help law enforcement officials stop DWI accidents.
The funds will allow for extra officers on the street and also for obtaining warrants for giving blood tests timely from a suspect. The “no refusal weekend” will include holiday times and officials expect the arrest numbers to be fairly high.
Montgomery County, Texas have even sent undercover officers into clubs to determine whether customers were being over served and there are reports of arrests of bartenders already on the books.
Make no mistake about it, drunk driving accidents in the Houston area are very serious both from a cost perspective and from a human perspective in lost lives and injured victims. Please designate a driver.
