Fatal motorcycle accident on Texas state highway

According to the Houston Police Department a man was traveling northbound on State Highway 75 on a Harley Davidson motorcycle when he veered into the southbound lane and crashed into a Ford F-150 pickup carrying a family of four.

It is unclear what caused the motorcyclist to veer into the opposite lane and hit the truck. The cyclist then skidded back across his lane and ended up in a ditch on the other side. Life Flight was dispatched to the scene and airlifted the motorcyclist to a Houston hospital were he later died of massive head injuries, HPD said.

The family in the pick up truck suffered only minor injuries, police said.

Current Texas law regarding motorcycle helmets allows persons 20 years of age and older to operate or be a passenger on a motorcycle without a helmet. Everyone under the age of 20 is required to wear a helmet while riding on or driving a motorcycle.

According to the US Government Traffic Safety Facts head injury is the leading cause of death in a motorcycle accident. A rider without a helmet is 40% more likely to suffer a fatal head injury than a helmeted rider.
