Officers indicate a motorcycle rider died Wednesday in a motorcycle accident in Houston. The rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the wreck.
Witnesses reported the rider was going at a high rate of speed when he swerved around a Honda Civic. The motorcycle hit the Honda so hard that the car was spun around. The occupants of the car were taken to the hospital.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2006 almost 5000 people died and about 88,000 were injured in highway motorcycle accidents in the United States. Head injury is a leading cause of death in motorcycle accidents.
A rider without a helmet is 40 % more likely to die from a head injury in a motorcycle accident than a rider with a helmet.
