OSHA- Freeport Company violations exposed workers

OSHA regulators have cited Gulf Chemical & Metallurgical Corp. in allegations of workers exposed to hazardous substances in the air, its reported.

Initial proposed penalties by OSHA exceed 50 thousand dollars.  However such initial proposed penalties are frequently reduced substantially, on a case by case basis.

OSHA was enacted to aide in work place safety.  Both in regulation of employers and employees, in providing safety standards for the minimum level of safe conduct acceptable in the workplace.

The General Duty clause of OSHA provides:

a) Each employer –
(1) shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees;

(2) shall comply with occupational safety and health standards promulgated under this Act.

OSHA regulations go on from the general duty clause to provide specifi rules to prevent such things as construction accidents.
