One thing we can all do is lead by example and practice safety as a part of our everyday lives. Not only will we reap the benefits of protecting our family and ourselves, we will be planting seeds for the future in raising our children.
I have two boys who have just completed grade school and I am very impressed with a program they went through called DARE. That program was about saying no to drug use and making smart choices.
Two years ago a student asked me to listen to his speech about DARE at a yearend program. The paper, which this student read to his classmates and his friends and family, caused tears to come to my eyes.
Reflecting about that moment, it recently dawned on me how important it is to our children for us to lead by example and incorporate good choice advise early on in their lives.
Simple things like the seat belt ritual, explaining safety rules of the road to preteens, and incorporating good or even green choices into everyday living will pay dividends long after we are gone.
So today, I challenge everyone to spend 10 minutes talking with a child about safety, the environment or good choices.
You will feel great after you have done it and planted seeds that will blossom for the future.
