The suspended sales of the popular model come after Consumer Reports issued a very critical review of the model. In a nutshell, Consumer Reports issued a do not buy rating on the GX 460.
Toyota indicated that it would temporarily stopped selling this model while it conducted its own tests on the GX 460. This is more bad news for the Japanese automaker and also a slap in the face for US regulators.
It is nothing short of outrageous that a major manufacturer such as Toyota has to rely on Consumer Reports to find issues and conduct testing. In my opinion, it is the duty of the manufacturer to test adequately each product before it is placed in the hands of a US consumer.
Also outrageous is that the entities charged with responsibility for protecting the consumer have been more interested in protecting the manufacturer than in the people injured and killed by the products.
It is high time that the American consumer is put first and regulators concern themselves with the American public’s safety and not manufacturers profits.
If the GX 460 is as reported by Consumer Reports the situation should have been uncovered and well-documented years prior to the release of the vehicle. Necessary testing is supposed to take place while the product is being developed and prior to be manufactured not after it has been released.
On a positive note for Toyota I believe they are to be commended for acting quickly once Consumer Reports reported the issue.
