Two workers injured when scaffolding collapses

Two construction workers were seriously injured while working on the façade of a retail center in Galveston County, officials reported. The accident occurred while the two men were working 12 feet off the ground on scaffolding when it collapsed.

One worker fell straight down while the other fell with the collapsing scaffolding, witnesses said. One worker suffered a head injury and the other broke his hip and arm as a result of the construction accident. Both were airlifted to local hospitals.

According to two shop owners the scaffolding that lined the strip center was placed on bricks and cinder blocks and didn’t appear to be properly installed. Neither worker was wearing a hard hat or safety harness when the accident happened.

One shop owner also said she considered calling the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) last week because she was concerned about possible unsafe working conditions. I wish now I had made the call she said.
