A 24 year old woman was killed this weekend when the car she was in had a blow out of the right rear tire, causing the driver to lose control of the car and flip over after hitting the bar ditch.
With a blow out or a tread separation of the rear tire, a driver is much more apt to lose control of the vehicle than if the tire is a front tire.
Safecar.gov recommends the following when faced with a blowout:
- Gradually release gas pedal
- Correct steering as necessary
- Once your vehicle has stabilized continue to slow down and pull off the road
DO NOT:
- Step on the brake
- Abruptly release gas pedal
For additional safety information see the safecar web site on tire safety.
